1. Who we are
Laterals is operated by Laterals Group Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. Our registered address is The Department, Clarence Dock, 4 The Blvd, Leeds, LS10 1PZ, United Kingdom.
For the purposes of applicable data protection legislation (including the UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Act 2018), we are the data controller responsible for your personal data.
2. What we collect
When you create an account and use the Laterals platform, we may collect the following information:
- Account information - your name, email address, and password when you register.
- Professional profile - information you provide in your anonymous brief, including your practice area, seniority, location preferences, and career motivations. This is written by you and shared only where you direct it.
- Firm selections - which firms, offices, and practice groups you choose to approach.
- Communications - any messages or correspondence between you and the Laterals team.
- Technical data - IP address, browser type, device information, and usage data collected automatically when you use the platform.
3. How we use your data
We use your personal data to:
- Provide and operate the Laterals platform, including delivering your anonymous brief to the firms you select.
- Facilitate introductions between you and law firms when both parties have expressed mutual interest and you have given explicit consent.
- Communicate with you about your account, approaches, and any firms that have expressed interest in your profile.
- Improve and develop the platform based on how it is used.
- Comply with legal obligations and protect against fraud or misuse.
4. Anonymity and consent
Confidentiality is the foundation of the Laterals platform. Your identity is never disclosed to any law firm unless you provide explicit, per-firm consent.
When you approach a firm through Laterals, only your anonymous brief is shared. This contains no personally identifiable information - no name, no current employer, and no contact details.
If a firm expresses interest in your anonymous profile, the Laterals team will contact you directly. You then decide, on a firm-by-firm basis, whether to reveal your identity and release your resume. Nothing is shared without your explicit instruction.
5. Legal basis for processing
We process your personal data on the following legal bases under UK GDPR:
- Contract - processing necessary to provide you with the Laterals platform and services you have signed up for.
- Consent - where you have given explicit consent, such as when you choose to reveal your identity to a specific firm.
- Legitimate interests - processing necessary for our legitimate business interests, such as improving the platform, provided these interests do not override your rights.
- Legal obligation - processing necessary to comply with applicable laws and regulations.
6. Who we share your data with
We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your identity with any law firm without your explicit consent. We may share data with:
- Law firms - only your anonymous brief, and only to the firms you specifically select. Your identity is never included unless you consent.
- Service providers - trusted third-party providers who help us operate the platform (such as hosting, email, and analytics providers). These providers are contractually bound to protect your data.
- Legal requirements - where we are required to disclose information by law, regulation, or court order.
7. Data retention
We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you with the platform. If you delete your account, your personal data, anonymous briefs, and approach history are permanently removed from our systems within 30 days.
We may retain certain data for longer where required by law or to resolve disputes.
8. Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the following rights:
- Access - the right to request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Rectification - the right to request correction of inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Erasure - the right to request deletion of your personal data.
- Restriction - the right to request that we restrict the processing of your data in certain circumstances.
- Portability - the right to receive your data in a structured, commonly used format.
- Objection - the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests.
- Withdraw consent - where processing is based on consent, the right to withdraw that consent at any time.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at contact@trylaterals.com. We will respond within 30 days.
9. Cookies
We use essential cookies to operate the platform, such as keeping you signed in. We may also use analytics cookies to understand how the platform is used. You can control cookie preferences through your browser settings.
10. Security
We take the security of your personal data seriously. We use industry-standard technical and organisational measures to protect your data against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. These include encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, and regular security reviews.
11. International transfers
Your data may be processed by service providers located outside the United Kingdom. Where this occurs, we ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place in accordance with UK data protection law, including standard contractual clauses or adequacy decisions.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will notify you through the platform or by email. The "last updated" date at the top of this page indicates when the policy was most recently revised.
